quality approvals

Berwin has approval to both the ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001 systems.

Approval to ISO 9001:2000 was achieved in 2003. This was achieved after a period of almost 10 years accreditation to the previous BS Quality Systems. Approval to this standard shows that we have a long running and serious commitment to customer satisfaction and continuous improvement through an investment programme in systems, equipment and people. We will continue to invest in all aspects of the business.

The company gained approval to the ISO14001 Environmental Quality standard in 1999. This was a landmark transition for the company as Berwin was the first compounder in the UK to achieve this accreditation. Accreditation to this standard clearly demonstrates that Berwin is totally committed to monitoring the impact of the business on the environment. In addition, this accreditation ensures that Berwin is continually looking at ways to reduce this impact and be compliant with current UK legislation.

We have several compounds cabable of meeting BS EN681-1: 1996 which covers compounds for use in Elastomeric Seals for Pipe Joints used in water drainage applications. These compounds can, where necessary be tested in accordance with the British Standard Kitemark approval system *. This approval demonstrates the capability of our quality and design systems, manufacturing process and release criteria. The company would be happy to test any of the current range of compoundsto Kitemark upon request.

The single largest proportion of our business is in the automotive industry. Traditionally the automotive industry customers place higher demands on their suppliers for continual improvement and the introduction of corrective and preventative actions. This has a positive effect upon all aspects of the business as improvements in this area improve systems and working practices for our entire customer base.

The Quality Control laboratory ensures that all compounds are tested and quickly released to the customer. This well equipped testing facility ensures full compliance with in-house or customer specifications prior to release. The laboratory uses up to date SPC software to facilitate in-line process control which, ensures the highest quality compounds.

Laboratory equipment includes Moving Disc Rheometers, Oscillating Disc Rheometers, Mooney viscometers, Wallace Rapid Plastimeter, Hardness Meters and SG balance. In addition there are a number of laboratory extruders which are used to determine the suitability of compounds for further processing.

* The Kitemark is a BSI registered certification mark, licensed for use on a product after independent testing has been carried out to establish conformity with the stated standard, and satisfactory assessment of the manufacturing control process has taken place to establish that such conformity may consistently be achieved. BSI verifies continuing product conformity by periodic product testing and assessment of the manufacturing process.
